Someone posted these in my local community group. They were taken last night in Whonnock area of Maple Ridge. Is it Aurora? Someone else on the group suggested ice pillars...I don't even know what that is. Anyone have any ideas?

I bet it has, it’s just been a while. Cold snaps of this magnitude used to be more common.

One picture in the tweet I shared in a post earlier showed a kid skating on Lost Lagoon in 1974. Looking at the stats for January 1974, we had about 10 days with lows in the -5c to -8c range with highs in the 0c to 3c range: https://climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_d ... 74&Month=1

With a fairly pedestrian cold snap of that duration/magnitude... was the ice really >6" thick? Way less enforcement by municipal authorities back then.

Yeah, l recall that event l was in grade 9 going to Kitsilano high at the time.
Sunshine and cold the whole event it ended with your what seemed like typical snowfall warning of 5cm to 10cm forecast.

Yeah, l recall that event l was in grade 9 going to Kitsilano high at the time.
Sunshine and cold the whole event it ended with your what seemed like typical snowfall warning of 5cm to 10cm forecast.

Do you remember the arctic blast of early-mid Dec '72? That was a very notable prolonged cold snap. Happened during a strong El Nino winter no less.

There was a La Niña cold snap in December 2009 that was pretty cold in Portland (several days with lows of -10˚C or less), but for some reason it doesn't seem that it was as extreme in Vancouver. Probably backdoor via the Columbia Gorge. The disappointing thing was that it was 100% dry. On the other hand, that allowed me to get into the Gorge to see the frozen waterfalls (in a typical blast, the roads through the gorge get closed by snow and ice by the time the falls get nice and frozen).
