They probably won't "certify" it safe until it's 12"+ thick. Which never happens.

Regardless, I've seen plenty of people on them before with much less cold and never heard of any problems. Same with trout lake and lost lagoon in the 70s, 80s and 90s. The photo evidence is there and the weather data shows temps were even warmer than what we're getting right now. I totally get the city want to be cautious though, especially in this day and age.
Mill Lake in Abby was 12" thick a few years ago and it wasn't officially open.

I actually don't remember either two lakes in Mundy park ever "officially" being open when frozen. People have always just walked or skated on them during cold snaps.

*I wanted to mention how poor the roads especially the side roads in Surrey are. Poor is in not cleared properly. Many lots/parking lots/gas stations etc have not had their lots cleared and they have had several days to get it done. Either too lazy or too cheap, and now it's going to be worse as it will be almost ice buried beneath the new snow. Very bad on the side roads with compact snow & ice on some hills. Surrey is pathetic!! I have no idea how other cities have been doing over the last week. :x
All similar. However, abbotsford from my travels hasn't been bad. Langley has some bad roads, but the that is normal for the township.

The State of Minnesota recommends 4" as the minimum thickness for activities on foot. They probably added another inch as a safety margin and because it's an urban lake and thus attracts lots of people.

It's called clown range for a reason.

best to think of it this way. your taxes pay for plowing and salting of arterials and collectors, not side streets. any service to side streets is a bonus.

fwiw, I just saw my first plow tonight on a minor collector since the snow started

Abbotsford uses more salt and sand than I've seen in my life before moving here.

Makes you wonder how thick the ice really was on lost lagoon during some of those fairly moderate cold snaps in the past when people would walk and skate on it.
