Another spectacular day! Was about 35c while going for a walk around downtown Jasper at 3-4pm.

Wow! Tholiday absolutely ridiculous shots unreal l was at the Athabasca glacier in 1995, 1997 and in 2011, how far has it receded? just in 2011 it was amazing how far we had to walk up to the glacier there were signs to watch out for crevices and there was a small lake forming.
Your doing the ultimate summer trip. I need to do that one next summer enjoy bud keep the shots coming, are you headed to Banff or Cow town? In 1997 we stopped in Hinton for a bite to eat at the Husky truck stop @ 1a.m. it was around the first day of summer and there was a sliver of light still to the north l'll never forget that.

Been there a few times over the years as well. It has indeed receded at a decent clip . That lake has grown to a larger size now too.
Right at the edge of the glacier:

Further down, near the parking lot (west of the hwy):

There are little year markings noting the edge of the glacier in a certain year every once and a while on the walk from the parking lot just to the west of the hwy all the way up to the edge of the glacier. The furthest away of which was 1895 that was pretty darn close to where the highway is now.

Staying in Hinton tonight... heading all the way up to Fort St John tomorrow. Unfortunately don't have enough time to stay in the rockies and had and still have a couple other things to do so covering a large distance in a short time period.

Edit: Also seems like there's a ton of Smitty's restaurants in Alberta still. Too bad many have closed in BC over the years. Better than Denny's or IHOP, imo.

It is amazing how much that glacier has retreated since I first saw it in the mid-1990’s.

Amazing and the stream is now a river from the glacier has grown as well holy hannah, looking forward to shots from Fort St. John. Good ole Smittys.

Welp Skipper Gimps Tee is making hay, are you stuck in the mud on the island. It's a warm 27c @ the pond in south Sardis.

Funnily enough there's a Smitty's in tiny downtown Comox and there's not alot of restaurants there, alot more in Courtney.

It is amazing how much that glacier has retreated since I first saw it in the mid-1990’s.

Yep. It was even more impressive in the early-mid 80s... got a few pics somewhere in some (now long lost) photo album of it back then.

The walk over is a decent treck now. Lots of 'danger' signs and it's quite evident you're walking over parts of the glacier that have gotten covered by a thick layer of rocks and dirt when getting close to the edge of the massive visible glacier/icefield.

In the pic below, see the glacier layer just under the big round rock at the front but otherwise essentially obscured by the thick layer of dirt and small rock that covers it -- that will likely give way at some point in the near future.

Just got back this evening from 9 days in Banff, Jasper and Canmore. Saw the big towering thunder storms building near Kamloops. Glacier has retreated since I was there last 19 years ago but was actually surprised there is still quite a bit left. Was super hot wondering around the mount towns. Car thermometer topped out at 37 near Chase at 2pm.

It's going to be too dangerous to hike up eventually l recall in 2011 a roped off area where the lake was forming on top and crevices.
It's too the point now that changes are occurring more rapidly. 95 & 97 the trek up was straight forward. Did you check out the glacier visitor center with the 10 dollar coffee and 20 dollar hot dogs. money grab unfortunately.

You bet , man that place sure was hopping last tuesday and that was for lunch , hooked up with friends that moved to parksville a year ago , my wife ordered the teriyaki bowl and everybody around stared at how big it was, there was probably enough to feed the whole table

Outstanding Cloves, amazing all the members vaca shots, seems the 2 seasoned members Gumps and l did the Gilligan's island trip. did you check out any of the waterfalls l never got a chance to see the Athabasca falls. Just the one further north can't recall the name spectacular nonetheless.
