I’ve been an air traffic controller for 10 years and I have never worked a night like that before. My colleague has been a YVR controller for 23 years and said the same.

We had airplanes littered across the apron. Airplanes running out of fuel. Airplanes declaring medical emergencies. It was like a game of chess moving things around the field.

Clearing guys to land and then finding a spot to park them was a mission to say the least.

We had guys deice and go to the runway. We would clear them for takeoff and they’d refuse because of deteriorating conditions. Only problem? Nowhere to put them.

I just got home and cracked open a beer. Time for some sleep, but I’ll have 3 munchkins awake in a bit.

Happy snow day, folks. Enjoy it.

Would that be the opposite of Richmond usually gets hosed to snowed.
The most snow l've ever seen in Richmond was in Dec/96 so that record is safe for awhile,
My parents lived out there so we were over for Christmas.

Depends on many factors. If they are already airborne and in close proximity to YVR, we might put them in a indefinite holding pattern until they have to land because of fuel. Then we’ll send them to their alternate of choice. Tonight it was Calgary and Seattle.

If the airplane is airborne and still far away, we’ll begin metering them with speed control. Aka slow them down.

If they have yet to depart their origin, we will put in a ground stop meaning they will be held on the ground at their origin airport.

Lots of factors and it gets complicated, but that is the gist of it.

Our ferry run it's cancelled. Again it says cancelled due to fog but detailed info is snow on roads and terminal.

Edit, sailing cancelled for most runs!

 What now is it just me or has B.C. ferries deteriorated in recent years. It just seems there snake bitten growing up we would take the ferry to the island Victoria or Nanimo or the Sunshine
Coast with never any issues perhaps a sailing wait but that was it it's sad really.

Great answer man!

Last question, what happens if you send them to Seattle but the person on the plane doesn't have a passport ? How do they get back?
