I had the local ski hills closing before Christmas.

I did not foresee the higher alpine areas including Baker and Whistler having issues. Next weeks AR looks to be all rain up there which could lead to closures before NYE.

But it doesn't look to be aimed at the Fraser Valley like November 2021. So another typical rainy day here but nothing unusual. While we don't need another major flood, it would be nice to something more significant than the typical rain shadow AR's.

Today's extended EPS shows our chance for below normal temps to be around week 2 in Jan. After that we end up right back where we started.

18Z GFS rainfall through Thursday evening (next week). Wet, but not as wet as the 12z. Again, Island looks to take the brunt of the ARs.

Major SSW event looking more and more likely but still not guaranteed. But there is an increasing number of ensemble members on the Euro showing a full wind reversal. See graph posted below. If this does verify, then I wouldn't worry too much about what the current models show as they usually struggle considerably leading up to and during SSW events. It should also be noted that a major SSW does not guarantee a cold outcome in the PNW but it's probably our best chance this winter. Time will tell but I'd be surprised if we don't see at least a few days of backdoor cold at some point in January. By the way, when looking at the posted graph, anything below the 0 line represents a major SSW where there is a full wind reversal in the stratosphere. So that's what we are looking for when examining this graph for major SSW potential.

Models appear to be doing away with the ARs on the 00z run. Just looks mild (+9 to +12C) with light rain, drizzle and fog.

Really want spring to come soon. Being socked in this mucky pattern is not enjoyable. Even the air quality has been moderate at times despite the rain due to the overall lack of wind this month.

Cold and very windy in Halifax currently. Would love to see a strong outflow event like that here but I'm probably out of luck this winter. :bang:

Sure hope they back to the AR solution. Drizzle is horrible. If it's going to rain, let it be a decent soaker. :bang:
