I hope we aren't rushing him. But maybe he's just that good and the Canucks actually won a draft pick for once. :silent:

Back from mushroom hunting.

Found this beauty when I was getting frustrated at not finding many chanterelles:

Bear's Head, Hericium abietis. It went in a campout curry last night. Yes, I take curry powder with me when I go camping.

But eventually I found where the chanterelles were:

They got turned into a batch of mushroom soup tonight.

Thanks for sharing!

Note how mine has really fine final branches (teeth) that all point downwards. Note how yours has final branches that are nowhere near so fine, and they mostly point upwards. That may all seem nitpicky, but it is an important set of differences.

Mine is (or was, before I cooked and ate it) one of the tooth fungi. That is a small group, all the Western North American species of which are either edible or so foul-tasting that there is no way you could gag them down, so amongst the safest to collect and eat. (And there’s nothing that looks like my specific one which is not edible.)

Yours, by contrast, is one of the coral fungi, a large group, many of which are poisonous (not deadly, but not immediately obviously, either, and who wants to get sick). Some are edible, even choice, but telling them apart can be tricky (as in, chemical tests and microscopic examination of spores required, you can’t just go by visible macroscopic characteristics). I can tell yours in the genus Ramaria and that is about it.
It's called clown range for a reason.

AbbyJr wrote: Tue Oct 07, 2025 7:12 pm The 2016/17 winter was one of the best here since 2008/09. In fact, I'd say even better since the cold was so persistent over the Dec to Feb period. That early Feb snowstorm was a nice bonus to an already solid winter. I'd love a repeat if any of the better old school analogs are off the table.

Looks damp. Maybe a short break on Monday and Tuesday? Then again, this will probably age like milk.
