Too bad YVR records began in 1937. Just missed the coldest February in recorded history for the south coast... 1936! :alert:

Monthly average in February 1936 was -0.4c at the old downtown Vancouver station; -1.6c at the old station in Steveston... can use both as historical proxies for YVR. Split the difference and we get a monthly average of -1.0c for YVR. :chilly:

The models have backed off on any chance of winter in both the medium and clown range. Even the ensembles are a big mess. Absolutely brutal. Why can’t we have the 50’s and 60’s climate? :x

Feels like we are going to be in a 2014-2016 period (minus the quick hitting 2014 cold snap).

At least it was chilly outside as we walked around the neighbourhood looking at Christmas lights.

We did have a few stinkfest winters in the 1950s and 1960s as well, to be fair. 1952-53, 1957-58, and 1969-70 instantly come to mind. In fact, the latter winter was infamous as the North Shore Mountains had absolutely no snowpack!

They are saying the top analogues for January across North America are 1959 and 1969.

Of course but some of the most dynamic and exciting winter weather in the PNW happened in the 50’s and 60’s. It was also much more common to see classic arctic blasts in the region during those years. We got January 1950, March 1951, January 1954, December 1956, January 1957, December 1968, and January 1969 as examples.

1962/63 wasn’t super cold but had multiple massive windstorms. Similar pattern occurred in 2006/07 but no windstorm has ever come close to the one on October 13th,1962, where Abby had gusts up to 145km/h. That was a top tier extreme wind event for the PNW region.

I believe the hottest July (by average high temp) on record in Abbotsford also occurred in 1958.
