I'm 99.9999% certain cold of that magnitude isn't going to happen.
Basically impossible in our current climate.

Yup.
But we can still shoot for some blue/purple departures.

Would probably still find a way to screw us in some way. 1c heavy rain and then rapidly dries out as temps drop to -5c.

Yeah it’ll never get that cold but you need the extreme runs anyways so that when it moderates, it’s still worth a crap. My theory of clown range GFS.

I would’ve said the same but.

Last time the operational had no ensemble support, the operational came the closest to verifying.
The GFS has surprisingly performed well in the long range with the general pattern, but its not good at the details.
So I'd sadly ignore the snow maps and the extreme nature of the cold its showing, but it could easily be right in terms of an arctic outbreak.

The arctic air struggles to get West of the Rockies..def more so in recent years. Yes blocking is good, but gimme a Yukon/PG High..that will bring the much needed cold temps here. The snows will come. There's something that gives me "snow" confidence about going into a snow event with a previous nights low of -12c or so
