Leighbugs wrote: Sun Jun 27, 2021 12:04 am The bugs you guys are talking about are chafer beetles. It's their mating season. They stay in the ground as larva over winter/spring until they mature into beetles and then for about a week in June they emerge and fly to the tops of trees in droves to have one big orgy. Then they'll go back into the ground, lay eggs and the whole thing starts again. The main issue with these beetles is that raccoons and birds LOVE to eat them and this time of year they can have a feast. So they will damage lawns by peeling up large areas of grass to eat. If you see any parts of your yard dug up it's likely due to a large number of chafer beetles enticing other wildlife to gorge themselves.

Bugs are gross.
We need a good old fashioned winter cold snap to keep their population in check.

Still irks me there's no station in Spences Bridge.
Turns out it was dead batteries...

currently 27 inside...not sure what it is outside because that sensor is also inside

I also wonder where the Sechelt station is.

Mine was still at 31.5...battery issue. I know they don't like cold but maybe they don't like heat either. :dunno:

I'd like an order of November 1985 - December 1964 - January 1950 - February 1936.

I'd say this this heatwave is essentially on par (or even a touch more anomalous) with that insane arctic blast that hit Texas back in Feb.

I think you have solved the mystery!
Looking up a pic I found:

Sure looks like what I saw tonight. Odd I have never seen this many before though, and I've lived in FH for 20 years!

Good job Leigbugs!

European Chafer Beetle to be exact!
European chafer beetle was first introduced to BC in 2001, likely through infested turf.
So yes, they are having an orgy like Leighbugs said.

I went for a walk at dusk the other night and those disgusting beetles were flying all over, getting stuck in my hair. I was freaking out, I HATE them. There seems to be a lot of them this year. I guess this heat isn't doing much to kill them.
