This is absolutely devastating. A worst case scenario. Just awful.

They haven't failed yet according to the mayor. But I get the sense that they expect them to fail.

I couldn’t agree more. This was bound to happen eventually.wetcoast91 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 9:36 pm For starters, we will probably need a few dry weeks, which is not looking likely. This lake will not recede without being pumped out.
Godspeed Abbotsford. This is going to be a very difficult few weeks.
Constructing the only roadway between Abbotsford and Chilliwack under river level in a floodplain is just completely idiotic.

That must have been a stressful day.East Chilliwack wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 8:53 pm We spent the day hauling cattle out of the sumas prairie, it was already very scary with water rising quickly, we did what we could until police told us there was no more going in. This is going to be a huge catastrophe, with hundreds of thousands of dead animals. The Fraser is actually going to invade the flats because the pumps are down.
It's so sad. I just saw a video on CBC about herding some horses to safety with a boat. What a crazy time this is.
0.8c currently and I can hear the creeks running even inside with the windows shut. They've already started rebuilding the road around the corner and had been running non-stop dump truck loads of sand all day, when I went to look, it hadn't made much of a dent in the hole. There's actually two culverts washed out on that road. There are a couple of makeshift foot bridges over the creeks so people can get out at least. Some lucky people have their cars on the 'right' side of the washouts.

Considering the lake also temporarily reformed as the entire sumas plain also flooded during the Nov 1990 storm, one can safely assume governments never learn from their mistakes.Weather101 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 9:49 pm I couldn’t agree more. This was bound to happen eventually.
What makes it even more damming is that screenshot you posted regarding the city asking for more funding for the pumps back in 2013. And of course nothing was done.

Probably they'll get the funding now after the fact but it'll cost that much more now.Typeing3 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 10:14 pm Considering the lake also temporarily reformed as the entire sumas plain also flooded during the Nov 1990 storm, one can safely assume governments never learn from their mistakes.

Re: November 2021 Forecasts and Discussions
It's amazing how far inland this AR reached. It's just so rare to see that kind of flooding in the normally very dry climate of Merrit and Princeton (unless it's the freshet in the Spring).. I guess the fetch of that AR and the relentless conveyor belt of moisture funneled deep into the mountains and filled in the rain shadow. Something similar happened in the 2010 atmospheric river that caused severe flooding in Bella Coola. The rainfall totals were also similar to this one. There was severe flooding in the West Chilcotin region during that AR, a region normally in a rain shadow.

Re: November 2021 Forecasts and Discussions
I think that was 98-99. The strong LA Nina year of record breaking snowpack. I remember 99-00 had an AR in mid December 99 and then dry spell. A snowy pattern jn early January 2000 and then a drier than normal winter after that.
